This is what worked for me, it is 100% anecdotal.

General Tips

  1. Pick topics that your kid is interested in. If they love Paw Patrol, get Paw Patrol books.

1. Learn letters

  1. Learn the alphabet song
  2. Identify and say upper-case (capital) letters, e.g. ABC
  3. Identify and say lower-case (small) letters, e.g. abc

Focus on learning the sounds of the letters.

Get Familiar with your Local Library

Your local public library is the single best way to help your kid learn to read. It's free, the staff are always helpful and it's a fantastic

Everyone has their preferred way to use the library; one way is to just drop in and pick up whatever books look interesting. Another way is to use the Hold System.

I really recommend using the Hold System. By putting a book on Hold, it is sent to your nearest library as soon as it's available. It saves a bunch of time, and the selection of books from the entire library network is much larger than any single library.
