Andor: The Family Fantasy Game is a great introduction to role-playing games for young kids. Players work together to rescue three wolf-cubs from the mountains, but before they can get there, they must complete some tasks for the bridge-guard.
My kid loves this game. The power fantasy of going on a quest was completely engrossing and she is still excited to play even now.
Players each get to choose from one of four characters: warrior, ranger, wizard and dwarf. Each character has both masculine and feminine appearance versions of both their character sheet and the character that moves round the board. So you can play as a girl or boy warrior, for example.
Each character has different strengths: the warrior has more dice for combat, the ranger can move further, the wizard is strong against large enemies, the dwarf can take shortcuts through caves.
There is a short description of the task each quest card that is great for practicing reading.
During the game, each player has 6-9 "sun" tokens that they can use to move around the board. There is quite a deep level of possible strategy in planning where to move, and what order to do the tasks.
